Using Technology Responsibly

In the popular comic series and movie franchise "Spider-Man", the main character's uncle states that "With great power comes great responsibility". This can be applied to the internet. Technology has given us many freedoms that would have been astounding to people from earlier time periods. Among these are access to records and knowledge, the ability to communicate like never before, and many benefits for historical research. But it is easy to abuse these freedoms that technology has given us.

One way to use technology responsibly is to fight for it to be accessible to all. We are privileged to have these resources, so we must ensure that they are not denied to anyone else. Many large cable companies and internet providers want to place limits on internet access, which would make it harder for people from lower income brackets to access the internet with the same reliability that it has usually held. It is our responsibility to view the internet as a tool to which everyone has a right. This gives people a voice to express themselves. We may share ideas, pursue entertainment, and connect with each other.

Another way to use technology responsibly is to not harass others on the internet. In historical research, there are a great many controversies that people become passionate about. These topics can be debated, but by removing person-to-person interaction, online debates can quickly spiral into mudslinging and personal attacks. As researchers, we must maintain decorum and professionalism at all times. The internet is a useful tool, but we must never let the power it gives to us overshadow our humanity.
