How History is Like a Computer Operating System

Operating systems have changed drastically over the past few decades. Less than two generations ago, people did not have ready access to computers to the degree that we do in this generation. Tablets, laptops, cell phones, and the like were unheard of. But, as technology has evolved, computer operating systems have evolved as well. Older systems have been updated to meet current times, and new systems have been developed. Likewise, in historical study, we have tried to emphasize different points than we did previously.

Before, historians may have researched the titans of history - the great conquerors, the tycoons, the millionaires. But recently with the push for progressivism, there has been a trend of people focusing on stories of the marginalized and oppressed. Why? Because we no longer live in a world that is as homogenous as the worlds of the past, and that is a wonderful thing. Our world now is diverse, and so we seek to emphasize diverse stories in history. Just as computer operating systems have been updated, our focus has been updated for changing times. And this is a wonderful thing.
