Historians and history enthusiasts alike usually conduct research on a time in which computers did not exist. However, with the conveniences of our own time, we are able to conduct that research using computers. Computers have changed historical research in multiple ways. The most obvious is that they allow us to research more quickly. From typing up biographies and reports to sorting through vast online databases, we can conduct research at higher speeds than ever before. Public records are now available online, letting researchers access primary sources from the comfort of their own home.
Computers have also allowed historians to better analyze documents. For example, if a document is found that historians do not know the author of, they can use computer software to analyze the writing style and compare it to similar writers, which allows them to form a logical hypothesis. Additionally, writing tends to fade over time. Computer software can make scans of historical documents and darken the writing to make it legible so that it can be preserved for future researchers.
Computers have increased the convenience and scale of research. They allow us to access and share knowledge more quickly. This lets more people learn about history. Overall, computers have made the past more accessible to the future.
